Shipping goods from China to Nigeria is a very important aspect of mini or major importation. It is a critical aspect of the business because, if after making payment for your goods and they cannot be shipped to you, then what purpose is the whole effort you put into the business.
Covid-19 pandemic has greatly affected the way shipment is done in many parts of the world. China in particular that usually experiences a large number of cargoes during this time of the year is facing restrictions due to laws about Covid-19 pandemic.
Actually goods received by airlines these days outnumber their capacities because of limited flight due to the pandemic effects. Goods that have liquids and batteries coming into Nigeria are currently experiencing delays. Parcels that contain batteries and are shipped through normal shipping from China to Nigeria now take about 21 to 30 days.
For the purpose of our discussion, shipping goods from China can be done in two basic ways: Sea freight and Air freight. If you are shipping through sea, your goods will be loaded in containers, on the other hand using air freight, your goods may or may not be loaded in a container depending on the size of the aircraft or the type of goods you are loading.
Naturally, airfreighting is faster than sea freighting because air planes are faster than ships. But air freighting is far more expensive than sea freighting. If you want to cut down on the cost of shipping, you are advised to use the sea. When shipping large quantities of goods, you will use sea freight to save cost.
It is good that you have an idea of what it costs to ship a container from China to Nigeria, though as a mini importer you may not start using containers now. There are two types of containers for shipment: The 20ft and 40ft containers.
Container shipping rates are not usually static as other things but a basic cost is always available. The basic rate is about $185 per cubic meter. Therefore, for a 20ft container you may be asked to pay between $2,000 to $3,000. For a 40ft container, the cost may rise to about $5,000. Remember that if you want your container to be sent to your warehouse from the port, it will cost you additional charges. Container fees do not include cartage cost, which is the fee to take it to your desired warehouse.
Many starters in mini-importation are advised to use Express Shipping offered by many logistics companies in Nigeria. Some of these companies are: DHL, Fedex, EMS, and so on.
There is one system I find extremely beautiful and I use it a lot. This system involves asking the company in China that you bought goods from to send the goods by local transport to the office of your chosen agent in china. Your agent will package all your parcels and send the goods through air freight to Nigeria.
You will pay extra for this service. You can also ask your agent in China to go and pick up your goods from the manufacturers or sellers’ warehouses and send them to you in Nigeria.
When your goods arrive in Nigeria, it takes the agent about one week from the day your goods got to their office in China to reach Nigeria by air under normal circumstances.
As soon as your cargo arrives, your China agent’s representative in Nigeria will call you to come and pick your goods or you can arrange for your goods to be sent directly to your office or warehouse.
Such an arrangement is good to enable you to master the business before you start creating your own shipping systems from China.
