One of the most bizarre things I see almost on daily business in importation business is people importing products without first finding out how successful the products will be in the market.
I am currently working with two companies facing the same problem; these are not small scale mini-importation projects, one has imported products worth over N15 million before looking for how to sell the products.
New products are introduced into the market all the time, but majority of them fail to make any serious impact; the products fail in the market place as quickly as they come in.
You may think that investors and inventors will correct themselves after seeing some horrible results faced by other people, but no, they still fall into the same trap.
Why do products fail?
It is very important to address the issue of why most people find it difficult to push their imported products to the customers that need them. Does it mean that the products are not needed or are of no use to the public?
Address The Needs of Customers:
Many of the products that fail to make impact today do so because they don’t really and clearly address any distinct need or solve any specific problem in consumers’ lives.
It is important to know that most of the times customers are interested in products that solve specific needs in their lives, and not beautiful and trendy products. Customers are looking for solution to their problems, hence the reason for looking for such products in the first instance.
A successful product is one that fills the void in the lives of people. For you to be successful in marketing you will have to identify the product that satisfies that need or void in the lives of customers. The need must be clearly identified without confusion. Once you are able to identify the need, then you start looking for how to introduce the solution – which is your new product.
Give people a good price for the value of your product:
Immediately you have been able to identify customer needs and you have gotten the product to offer a solution, the other thing is for you to define the value of the product.
Let me tell you something, no matter how your product solves people’s problem, even if your product is the only one in the market solving that problem, people will not buy if the value is not worth the price. If your product is unreasonably priced, customers will try to find a way of getting around their problem. Pricing is very important for customers especially this period in the history of the country and even the world in general.
Communicate:
More often we see marketing as a one-way street; companies over feed potential customers with all the features of their product instead of trying to explain and answer the customer’s questions. Establishing communication with customers will always pay, since it offers you the most important perspective on your new product from the audience that will make your product succeed or fail.
Availability:
No matter how good your product is, if it is difficult to get, customers will opt for another solution or avoid your product completely. You need to carefully consider how your customers will get the products. This is very important too, not after using the product, they will not be able to get more supplies; this can cause a product to fail.
Do not fall into the trap of just waking up and importing products without conducting a research on the marketability of the product, if you do that you will have the product stuck in your hands.
Don’t ever import any product because you love it, you are not going to use the product alone; you must import products that a large number of people will need.
If you are new to importation, whether major or mini importation, first conduct a research on the product you want to import to determine whether you have the market to sell your products.
